Rehabilitation of Coastals Ecosystems for a Greener Earth

Situbondo, December 2, 2022 – PT Paiton Energy and POMI actively participate in being part of the solution for efforts to green the earth. This effort was realized through tree planting activities in Situbondo Regency.

As an effort to maintain coastal ecosystems and the coastal environment as well as mitigate climate change, Paiton Energy and POMI planted thousands of plant seeds at Jeding Block, Labuhan Merak RPTN, Baluran National Park, Situbondo Regency, East Java, on November 26, 2022.

Baluran National Park is a 29,739 hectare conservation area located in Situbondo Regency, East Java. This area has various types of ecosystems ranging from marine, coastal, savanna, lowland forest to mountain ecosystems. The water area (sea) covering an area of 3,441.45 hectares in the Baluran National Park area is an asset that has long been relied on by the residents of Merak Village and the surrounding villages to obtain fish and other marine products.

Through this activity, 1,600 seedlings were planted consisting of mangrove, ketapang, kepuh, kanji and tamarind species. This activity is also in line with the purpose of commemorating Indonesia's Tree Planting Day every 28 November.

The activity of planting 1,600 tree seedlings at Jeding Block, Labuhan Merak RPTN, Baluran National Park was a participation and collaboration between Paiton Energy - POMI and the Wana Baluran Merak Jaya Cooperative (Waban Raja) whose members consisted of Merak villagers and employees of the Baluran National Park Office.

Chief Financial Officer of Paiton Energy, Bayu Widyanto said the activity was a Company program in the field of environment and climate change mitigation. "The Company welcomes the concern of the Merak people village for the preservation of coastal ecosystems which must be protected and preserved," said Bayu.

The head of SPTN Region II Karangtekok, Lukman Hidayat who represented the Head of the Baluran National Park said the aim of this planting activity was to protect and preserve the coast of Labuhan Merak in Baluran National Park, as well as increase the participation of the Merak Village community in efforts to preserve coastal ecosystems in the environment around where they live.

"Of course, it is hoped that this activity can create a culture of love for the environment from an early age in the people of Merak Village," said Lukman.

Head of Merak Village, Nur Rohman said that as individuals who have long been part of the Baluran National Park area, the residents of Merak village are also concerned about the degradation of mangrove forests in this National Park, especially around residents' places.

"We are very grateful for Paiton Energy- POMI's concern through its CSR program and the Baluran National Park Office in efforts to preserve the coastal ecosystem of Merak village," said Nur Rohman.

The planting activity also involved 70 participants from agencies: the Baluran National Park Office, the Situbondo Environment Service, the Banyuputih District Government, the Sumberwaru Village Government, students from SDN 01 Sumberwaru Filial Merak, and PAUD students from the Merak Study Group.

Mangrove Planting in Blekok Village Ecotourism

Paiton Energy - POMI's efforts to mitigate climate change are accompanied by the participation of its employees.

On November 28, Paiton Energy - POMI through a collaboration between the PT POMI Employee Wife Association (PIPMI) and the POMI Female Employee Club (IFEC) carried out mangrove planting activities in ecotourism in Blekok village, Situbondo.

Since 2018 the Blekok village in Klatakan Village has been designated as a mangrove area with a distinctive fauna called the Blekok bird. This stipulation is in line with the Situbondo Regent Regulation concerning Biodiversity Conservation. 

Human Resources Manager of POMI, Rochman Hidayat said that through this activity, the Company wants to realize the role of PIPMI and IFEC in dealing with environmental issues and can have a positive impact in many ways. "Hopefully this planting activity can strengthen the friendship of the Paiton Energy - POMI big family and provide benefits to the community," said Rochman.

The mangrove and Blekok bird conservation area currently has an area of around 27 hectares and is integrated with the economic activities of the surrounding residents. In addition, the mangrove ecosystem in the pole category in Blekok village has a total biomass of 2100 tons/ha and a carbon stock of 1092.6 tonsC/ha.

Paiton Energy has implemented its CSR program since 2000 which was designed annually and monitored by the Community Development Committee. The programs are categorized into three focuses, namely supporting the sustainability of Companies (power plant), socio-economic sustainability, and energy and environmental sustainability.
